What did you do for Father’s Day?

One of my readers posted a comment on one of my blogs a long time ago after me apologizing for my lack of writing. She said something along the lines of “don’t apologize for not writing. our blogs are supposed to be about our lives. it’s not about our lives being about writing blogs.”

So now I don’t feel bad when I can’t keep up. I just know that something else has got a hold of me and my blog will always be there along with it’s readers. So here I am. Summer got a hold of me but in this minute things have been put on hold, I have an afternoon free, and so here I bring you the latest and greatest. In my opinion anyway.

I’ve been camping (ok just once so far). I’ve been spending time with my family and friends. I’ve been soaking up the sun. I’ve been snapping random shots. I’ve been hanging out with the bf and checking lots of things off of our list. O and a lot more. So here in this brief time frame I am going to show you random shots of most of these things. Are you ready? This is random…

No, no, no this blog is not about picture frames. I’m not sure I could write a blog about picture frames because my style of frames would probably be different from yours .

This blog is actually about framing your subject (the thing you are taking a picture of). You could frame someone with shapes, patterns, colors, an object. Really the list could go on. Frames draw you in to the subject or make it look more appealing to the eye. Frames are fun and easy to apply to a lot of pictures. Here are some examples that I could find of framing-

In the picture above the bricks are surrounding my subject pulling you towards it in a very subtle way.

In this picture the flag is surrounded by a very blue sky. I feel like the reason the blue makes such an excellent frame and pulls you in is because of the great color pair that it is. Blue and red.

In this picture the blue/gray and pink striped background match the couples shirts along with patterns of the stripes you have a great yet subtle frame. This one isn’t quite as bold as the bricks in the first picture and has less pattern. But, it’s still a frame.

In this last picture the flowers are framing themselves. Though out of focus this frame still draws you in and helps your eye focus on what I wanted to capture.

These are just a few ideas for framing and like I said there are so many more. So get out there and frame your subjects!

Reflections are fun and most of the time all you need is a lot of contrast to make the reflection pop (in my experience anyway). On the photo below I did just that added contrast and a bit of saturation. Besides this the picture was good as is and actually is one of my favorite shots these days. Have fun with reflection shots but make sure your camera focus’ on the right thing or the reflection could end up blurry.

And here is my after editing shot. The only thing you will notice is the bit of grain that showed up in the picture as I added some contrast to it. For this shot I like the grain but most of the time you will want a lower ISO than what I used that way your reflection is clear and crisp.

Another thing you will notice is my camera settings. If you look a my past Picture of the Week posts you will notice that I have these settings on my camera most of the time. I was taught that every time you shut your camera off you should have your camera set to where you can pick it up and shoot any picture (and have it look somewhat great) at any given time. These are my standards. These are my settings. If you ever came over to my house and turned my camera on you would find that my camera is set to ISO400 (I did change the ISO for the picture above), SS1/6o, and F-stop/5.6. Fiddle with your own camera and find what settings you use the most. That is bound to be your “safe” spot like the settings above are for me. The awesome thing is that most of the time these settings produce brilliant pictures.

Last weekend we started “checking things off” of our list. Then as the week went on we “checked” a few more things off of it. I tell ya it’s such a fun time. Last weekend we attempted to fly a kite, which neither of us have done since we were kids, but it was an epic fail and we are going to have to try that one again….when it’s less windy. Yes…I just said less windy. So there will eventually be a blog post about kite flying. But this blog post is about my wall. Weird I know. You see I have this favorite wall that I had my own senior pictures taken by and I have taken some other pictures myself there as well. I’m not sure why I love this wall but Ryan wanted to see it. So off to Old Colorado City we went and this is what happened-

I took some nice pictures of Ryan.

He took some of me (he is not a photographer so at first he didn’t focus on the right things but he got a few good ones and I was impressed)

We made some silly faces.

Then Ryan stole my camera (more than once) and we got a lot of random shots of me. The one below is my favorite because it’s actually an amazing picture (in my opinon).

So this past week I wasted 1 entire roll of film (granted that’s not that many pictures) in 10 minutes. I took it to a local store to get it developed in a cheaper manner and I ended up with not a single picture. They mixed chemicals wrong and destroyed my film. I was very much so saddened to have lost the great shots I took with it. It kinda made me mad to.

So I have decided that I want to learn how to develop my own film. I seriously don’t know how hard or easy this is. I don’t have a clue where to even start. I have a friend who said she has some old darkroom stuff to give me but, I don’t think she has all of the supplies I would need.

So I need your help.

What do I need to have my very own dark room? If any of you know and would be happy to give me a list of things to buy I would appreciate it so much.

Good or bad…

This shot was taken inside. At my grandma’s house to be exact …the day of my sister’s wedding. Moving on…

One of the benefits of shooting inside is you have complete control over the lighting and where you want a picture taken at. The lighting outside (even though it is the ultimate light source of life) constantly changes. Whether that be with the clouds that roll by, or the sun that moves and is at different points in the sky all day, or even just a straight up sunny day which causes harsh shadows. Inside I have control by the settings on my camera, my flash, a blind that is opened or closed, or just asking someone to come over to a brighter spot in the room. It’s kinda nice!

Practice taking picture indoors. Whether that be of random objects or of a friend or family member that is close by. On days when I don’t have much to do I am constantly picking up my camera and fidling with every single setting on it just so I will know my camera better. Ultimatly that leads to being able to pick up your camera in any lighting situation and be able to know what settings you will need to put your camera at to get the shots you want. Practice makes perfect and accuracy is always great.

Here’s to the {and more} part-

This week I took some fun shots with my camera phone and wanted to post them. I also wanted to let you all know I am going to be going on some picture taking adventures this week. I will be using my Minolta (film) camera and can’t wait to post those images on here!

I not only have a gut feeling that change with my photography is coming but, also see the change slowly but surely coming. Annnddd for now I’ll leave you with these random shots of my life this week. I hope your week was just as fabulous as mine !
